Money trumps the value of human life again in China

    http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/foreigners/2015/09/why_d...

Cliffnotes: In China it is often cheaper to run over and kill someone than to pay for the person's medical expenses so drivers often run over people repeatedly to ensure that the victims die.

My question is this: is automobile liability insurance not common in China? In America a typical insurance policy will cover up to a few hundred thousand dollars in liability and it is easy to buy additional insurance. Do these BMW drivers not have insurance to protect them from lawsuits?

And people wonder why I have a vigilante mentality! Not just for the drivers, but also for the 'judges' and 'prosecution'. the only question in my mind is: to have these arse-wipes killed outright, or just put in hospital for a few months? (of course, both would be good... and perhaps their relatives first - at least, those who knowingly 'profit' from such corruption.

Just bought a new car the other day. The old BYD finally outlived it's usefulness. To answer your question, when setting up the insurance on the new car, the minimum allowed amount of liability coverage was 300k rmb, or less than 50k usd. 500k rmb of liability coverage seems to be the norm here, assuming you're a law abiding citizen and actually insuring your vehicle.

Interesting how that 500k figure is around what the families of the deceased pedestrians receive - by killing a pedestrian a properly insured driver actually ends up paying nothing but might be stuck for hundreds of thousands if the pedestrian lives.

I'm glad I didn't know about this when I was in China. This is basically the government helping you cover up accidental-became-deliberate murder simply because it serves their population reduction policy. Watch out on the streets: If you're hit and the driver doesn't run, it isn't cause to breathe a sigh of relief.

It what I've been thinking for a while now: Chinese become violent at the mere suggestion of being held accountable for their actions. They will murder to avoid it.
And it's not even a CCP thing: Taiwan has these jerks as well, as the article demonstrates. This is a failure of culture.

This is nothing more than government sanctioned killing for those that can pay the excessive bribes.

For people with power and money and guanxi....this is merely a speed bump (pun intended).

This behavior lands squarely at the feet of those who make the laws...and bend them...for the right price.

Regard for life other than immediate family is an after thought in China....especially those with connections..and this will never end as long as those in power are never held accountable to the masses.

the law allows the family to come back to court again and again for more money, not a one time fixed payout for a disability, this is what needs to be changed. the amount is just paperwork and payments, but if the payments never stop, you have an actuary nightmare from hell.

What really disgusts me is the courts and police siding with the drivers and calling these intentional murders accidents, or trying to cover them up.

Liability insurance is mandatory, much in the same ways as accepting bribes are.
